I’m Barry L. Brown, SPHR, CCP – President of Effective Resources, Inc., a consulting firm that’s been around since 1993, specializing in the ‘technical’ side of HR: compensation, incentive plans, performance management, merit budgeting, employee opinion surveys, and (another specialty) salary surveys. I found that I have little patience with whining employees and incompetent managers, so I focused on what I really love … crunching numbers.

Angel is my partner (in more ways than one) and manages the annual surveys, runs the office, and prints the money. (She must print it because there wasn’t much before she came along!) In addition, she writes Affirmative Action Plans for federal contractors – and yes, that includes all the statistical analyses. We’re one of those rare (married) couples who work great together.

Our client list is extensive for a small firm and, if you’ll take a peek (http://www.EffectiveResources.com), you’ll find it includes a wide range of organizations: from small to global, aerospace to theatre to healthcare, and a lot in between. The common denominator: people and payroll. My degree (from the University of Tennessee) is in business and I communicate well with senior management because I speak their language … money!

In addition to consulting, I’m a national speaker and writer. I’ve spoken at some of the largest HR conferences in the country: Atlanta, Houston, Long Beach, and Orlando just to mention a few. I’m also very active – that means much more than just paying membership dues – in the HR community. I’m the Past President of HR Tampa, a member of the Tennessee Valley HR Association, member of the Suncoast HR Management Association, and have belonged to SHRM since 1974.

I enjoy the outdoors, love dogs, tolerate cats, and have been a musician since I was a kid. I enjoy the latest technologies and put most to practical use. I crunch numbers on my laptop, but always have an HP12C close by when things get serious. Hope you’ll enjoy my rants and raves. Stop by anytime.
